Rileyroos

Rosie Toesies is happy to announce our newest shoe line, Rileyroos. Designed to imitate barefoot walking, Rileyroos have a flexible rubber padded sole to protect little feet. The sole curls above little toes to provide leverage as little ones make their natural gravitation from crawling to walking. Rileyroos combine style and comfort to set your little one off on their next adventure.

Rileyroos are a great choice for your active walker as they provide a more durable sole, while still being flexible and soft. Many parents have the same concern once their child reaches 18 months. They want a shoe that offers a little more durabilty and protection since their child is a lot more active/mobile. Rosie Toesies believes that Rileyroos are an excellent choice for your running, jumping, puddle stomping 1 1/2 year old!

Stamp out Hunger

Help Stamp out Hunger on Saturday, May 10th 2008.
On the day before Mother’s Day this year, letter carriers will focus their efforts on restocking the community food banks, pantries and shelters that millions of American families will rely on throughout the summer. The drive takes place every year in May because food bank donations tend to wane after the winter holidays. This drop-off is particularly troublesome since the hunger problem is usually at its most critical during the summer when school breakfast and lunch programs—often the only source of stable nutrition for millions of children—are suspended.

What do you have to do?
It's simple. Just leave a bag or box with non-perishable/can foods by your mail box on Saturday, May 10th. Your mail carrier will pick it up and it will then be distributed to the closest food bank.

Beach Cleanup

I wanted to do something in honor of Earth Day so I decided that I would head down to my local beach and help pick up litter. I have been wanting to do this for quite some time and decided that April 22 (Earth Day) would be a great day to start! Many beaches have a cleanup once a month, on the weekend, and anyone young, and old is welcome to help. If you live in the coastal states you can help too! It's a great thing to do with your children too! Visit the Surfrider Foundation to find information on your local chapter.

According to the Surfrider Foundation, almost 90 percent of floating marine debris is plastic. Plastics take hundreds of years to breakdown and may continue to trap and kill animals year after year. Birds, fish and mammals often mistake plastic for food. Some birds even feed it to their young. With plastic filling their stomachs, animals have a false feeling of being full, and may die of starvation. Sea turtles mistake plastic bags for jellyfish, one of their favorite foods. Even gray whales have been found dead with plastic bags and sheeting in their stomachs.

Which brings me to my next topic. Reusable bags. Today there are so many stylish reusable bags out there for purchase. Check Reusablebags.com and Ecobags.com. Many grocery stores also offer reusable bags for a small fee (check your local grocer). It is a great way to help our environment and what better month to start than Earth Month! You can always request them as a birthday gift, anniversary gift, x-mas gift etc. These also make great gift giving ideas too!

San Francisco is the first city to ban plastic bags

Some eye-opening facts about plastic bags:

:: Each year, an estimated 500 billion to 1 trillion plastic bags are consumed worldwide. That comes out to over one million per minute. Billions end up as litter each year.

:: Plastic bags are among the 12 items of debris most often found in coastal cleanups, according to the nonprofit Center for Marine Conservation.

:: The average family accumulates 60 plastic bags in only four trips to the grocery store.

:: Worldwide, an estimated 4 billion plastic bags end up as litter each year. Tied end to end that’s enough to circle the earth 63 times.

:: Plastics are forever! Plastics do NOT biodegrade. Rather, they photodegrade. A process, where sunlight breaks down plastic into smaller and smaller pieces.

Please don't forget plastic water bottles too. Consider buying a Brita Water Pitcher and/or a SIGG water bottle instead to help cut back on plastic waste.
